2009 Mixers with Shakers Event – IQ Inc’s Charity Announced!
By MikeD under In The News, Pittsburgh News
2009 Mixers with Shakers Event – IQ Inc’s Charity Announced: Three Rivers Adaptive Sports (TRAS) the local chapter of Disable Sports USA!
Thank you to all those who submitted suggestions for IQ’s charity of choice for the 2009 Mixers with Shakers event! We received many great nominations (including the Wounded Warrior Project, the Heart & Vascular Center at the Western Pennsylvania Hospital Forbes Regional Campus, Fayette Friends of Animals and Gwen’s Girls) and after consideration IQ has determined our charity this year will be the Three Rivers Adaptive Sports (TRAS) the local chapter of Disable Sports USA (http://www.traspa.org/Welcome.html) – thank you to Fred Abercrombie for the submission.
TRAS provides recreation for young and old with various disabilities. A member of the IQ team has a family member born with Cerebral Palsy. Over the past 19 years, TRAS has provided services that has allowed him to become a very accomplished Alpine Skier and even own his own Bi-Ski. He has also been afforded the opportunity to ski with members of the US Disabled Olympic Ski Team.
Beside snow skiing in the winter, the group holds a yearly water ski clinic (thought to be the largest in the US), along with camping trips, bike trips, paintball, canoe trips and other activities. The organization’s motto is: “If I can do this I can do anything…” Started by veterans of the Vietnam War, over the years they have shifted from individuals who are “War Injured” to all those with all types of disabilities.
We would like to invite everyone to attend the Mixers with Shakers event held on Thursday, November 12that 5:30PM at the Doubletree Hotel Pittsburgh Airport. The cost at the door is $10 – and tips for your favorite bartender! IQ Inc. will also be collecting donations from now until November 12th. For those not attending, please feel free to forward your donation to:

Q&A w/Ann Dugan, Assistant Director of Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence
By MikeD under Entrepreneurship, In The News, Pittsburgh News
Take a look at a recent interview with Ann Dugan of Pitt’s Institute for Entrepreneurial Excellence. IQ has had the good fortune of working with Ann through the IEE. It’s a great program for both established and aspiring entreprenurs. Of particular interest to us was Ann’s point regarding lessons she learned from her family’s business growing up…
You have to be quick to capitalize on opportunities. In my grandparents’ and mother’s generations, they had to make a couple systemic changes. They had to deal with World War II, which wasn’t the best for them, but the aftermath was. They decided to get out of the business of planing lumber and get more involved in distribution, and that’s when they added building supply products as well. They had to think of their competitive advantage and what they could do. In an entrepreneurial situation, you have to continually modify your vision and move it forward.
We agree with Ann’s sentiment. It’s so important to be agile today. You have to understand your competition and devise a strategy to create a competitive advantage.
